LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawian football experienced a historic and emotional moment on Wednesday December 24, 2025 as Mighty Tigers were officially relegated from the TNM Super League for the first time in their history.
Founded in 1980 as Admarc Tigers, the Blantyre-based club gained promotion to the top flight in 1984 and soon established itself as one of Malawi’s traditional football powerhouses.
Their golden era peaked in 1989 when they were crowned Super League champions, having earlier finished runners-up in 1986.
For an impressive 38 consecutive years, the Kau Kau Boys managed to retain their Premier League status, often navigating turbulent seasons but consistently avoiding the drop.
That remarkable run, however, came to an end at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe, where a narrow 1–0 defeat to Blue Eagles sealed their relegation with one match still remaining.
The loss brought a painful conclusion to a campaign that struggled for consistency from the outset.
Mighty Tigers have flirted with relegation over the past five seasons, surviving by slim margins on several occasions.
The 2025 season proved too demanding, as the team collected just 27 points from 29 matches, registering six wins, nine draws, and 14 defeats.
Tigers become the second side to be relegated this season, joining Songwe Border United.
Despite their current predicament, Mighty Tigers’ contribution to Malawian football remains significant.
The club has nurtured numerous talented players who later featured for leading teams such as Mighty Wanderers, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Silver Strikers, and several other sides nationwide.
Their role in player development continues to earn widespread respect.
The relegation occurred under the leadership of coach Trevor Kajawa, who took over from Leo Mpulula with 13 matches remaining.
Kajawa was appointed to steer the club away from danger, but the task ultimately proved insurmountable.
Club owner Robin Alufandika, who has overseen both the club’s glory years and recent struggles, now faces the challenge of rebuilding.
Once regarded as one of Malawi’s football heavyweights, Mighty Tigers will compete in the NBS Bank National Division next season, marking a new and sobering chapter in the club’s storied history.
