MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Newly appointed minister of Youth and Sports, Ulemu Msungama, has committed to uplifting the standards of sports in the country.
Msungama made the remarks to the media on Thursday, July 9, 2020 where he said he knows well that sports fraternity in Malawi is waiting with bated breath the resumption of sporting activities when the government orders so.
“I’m extremely excited that the President can trust me with the Ministry of Sports. What I would ask Malawians is to put their trust in me because I love soccer so much; I am very much interested in sports and I would pledge my hundred percent support in making sure that things go accordingly. So I would assure you that it is my personal interest to make things happen,” said Msungama.
Honourable Msungama further stressed that once he is sworn in, he will go flat out in mobilising support and consultation with relevant stakeholders in managing sports in the face of Covid-19.
Meanwhile, one of the sports analysts in the country, George Chiusiwa, has reminded the new minister to gunner for enough funds so as to put state of the art structures in place.
Chiusiwa said: “Many sports associations have failed to deliver because of poor or inadequate funding. It is one of the issues that is also supposed to be looked into. Can we look at choosing a business model in operations of the sports associations. You look at many of these sports associations banking on government money or government subvention to sustain themselves. This is not sustainable.”
President Chakwera announced his new cabinet on July 8, 2020, in which he roped in Ulemu Msungama to head the Ministry of Youth and Sports. However, the minister will have an uphill task to see sports through its normal resumption in the face of global pandemic of Covid-19.
