BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-When he arrived at the bustling Mkando Trading Centre, the tenth stop on his tour of Mulanje District, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba began by inspecting the Mkando Bridge to assess the progress of reconstruction works.
Mumba stated that it is under President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration that the bridge is finally being rehabilitated, noting that past governments had neglected the project despite its importance.
He emphasized that the Mkando Bridge, which connects Mulanje and Chiradzulu through the M04 road, plays a vital role in the region’s economy and social life.
For years, the bridge had been in a state of disrepair, creating major obstacles for trade, education, and other essential services.
Mumba expressed satisfaction that the reconstruction work is being carried out by Malawian contractors, underscoring the government’s commitment to empowering local expertise.
He said this approach not only ensures the bridge is restored but also provides economic opportunities for Malawian workers and companies.
The Mkando Bridge is viewed as a lifeline for communities in Mulanje and Chiradzulu, facilitating the movement of goods, agricultural produce, and people across districts.
Residents have long complained that the poor state of the bridge hindered businesses, delayed school access, and disrupted essential services.
The ongoing reconstruction is therefore seen as a long-awaited solution that will unlock opportunities and improve livelihoods in both districts.
Conclusion
The reconstruction of the Mkando Bridge stands as a clear example of how infrastructure investments can directly transform lives and communities.
By prioritizing such critical projects, the Chakwera administration signals its recognition of the role infrastructure plays in trade, education, and development.
The involvement of Malawian contractors further reflects a commitment to local capacity building and self-reliance.
For Mulanje and Chiradzulu, the new Mkando Bridge is more than concrete and steel—it is a promise of connectivity, progress, and renewed hope for the future.
