Lilongwe, March 30, 2015: Residents of Lilongwe have raised a concern over the malpractice by thugs who are attacking motorists along the Lilongwe by-pass road especially during the sunset.

One of the concerned motorists, Thokozani Chiputa told Malawi News Agency (Mana) reporter that on Friday he was attacked by four unknown robbers as he drove from Likuni to Area 49 at around 5:30 in the evening.

“I was driving from the direction of Likuni going towards Area 9, soon after crossing the Likuni roundabout near Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) I met this fate,” said Chiputa.

He said, “They took away some cash, laptop and other small things from my vehicle. Unfortunately by then I was alone in the vehicle I couldn’t do anything but what I was surprised with was that they were not even attempting to steal my vehicle.”

Chiputa said these thugs closed the road with a big stick which made him to stop the vehicle without knowing that they were in the garden watching him dropping out from the vehicle.

He said that he is not the only person being attacked along this road, some of them they do not bother to report at police, they just decide not use the road again.

Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer, Kingsley Dandaula confirmed to have received some of the complaints from the road users.

“We have been receiving different complaints from different people complaining of being attacked by thugs along the Lilongwe by-pass road,” he said.

Dandaula said at the moment, police are doing the patrols to make sure that road users are moving safely.

“No any arrests have been made so far, police officers are conducting patrols day and night in order to arrest those who are shocking motorist or road users along this road,” said Dandaula.
