Thyolo. May 29, 2017: President Peter Mutharika on Sunday, asked traditional leaders to promote unity amongst Malawians, in order to develop the country.
The Malawi President said this during the alleviation of Senior Chief Ngolongoliwa (Laelo Costa Juma), to Paramount Chief.
The function was held at Mulhako wa Alhomwe Headquarters at Chonde in Mulanje District, and brought together different traditional leaders across the country.
Mutharika said unity, collaboration, and a hardworking spirit, are important elements of fostering development in the country.
“As chiefs, you have a huge role in ensuring that all Malawians are united. Do not expect the country to develop if Malawians work in divisions. We need to work together, since united we stand and divided we fall,” said Mutharika.
He also asked traditional leaders to be fair and transparent when discharging their duties. The President said this will reduce favouritism and bias in the communities they serve.
Of newly-installed Paramount Ngolongoliwa, President Mutharika said, he deserves to be elevated because of his hard-working spirit.
“Chief Ngolongoliwa has helped me in a number of issues. He is an advisor and he has the welfare of fellow chiefs at heart. He is a reliable asset in as far as spearheading development projects in the country is concerned,” said Mutharika.
Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa, speaking on behalf of Paramount Chiefs in the country, urged all Malawi chiefs to love and respect each other regardless of their tribes.
“We can only promote our traditions and values if we respect each other. We are all Malawians. Let us be united, because in unity there is power,” said Kyungu.
Chief Ngolongoliwa was elevated to Paramount Chief on 19 March this year.
