MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Magistrate Court in Mzuzu on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 settled on July 21, 2020 as the day it will decide on whether or not to grant bail to Joe Thomas Nyirongo, popularly known as Big Joe and his three accomplices; Lumbani Munthali, Thembisile Nkosi and George Mwamutowe of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Nyirongo, who is one of the most notorious supporters of DPP in the north, and the accomplices were arrested on suspicion that they led a group that wrecked havoc during a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) rally that took place at Chibavi in Mzuzu in 2016.
According to Resident Magistrate Peter Kandulu, the court will weigh the possibility of granting bail to the four suspects on 21 July, 2020 which fall on Tuesday next week.
However, lawyer representing the four, Chrispine Ghambi, expressed shock to note that the suspects are denied bail yet it is their right to be granted the same.
“It is a right of every suspect to be granted bail regardless of whether one is a murder suspect or not and this is in order with our constitution. So, these people needed to be granted a bail. I wondered why the court was not of the views of the bail because the facts laid in there were not convincing.
“For your information, these people were also arrested in 2016, but were granted bail. So, to say that they should not be granted bail because the matter is a serious one, is a shock to me,” wondered Counsel Ghambi.
Ghambi also prayed for bail of Christopher Nzomera Ngwira, who is also another suspect in the matter. The Police summoned Ngwira to explain his side of the story.
In the run up to 2019 tripartite elections and the 2020 fresh presidential polls, scenes of political violence were rampant with political party supporters fighting their opponents in a bid to frustrate one another.
