The National Assembly has recently passed a bill that addresses agricultural practices in the country.

The Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, stated that once the bill becomes law, it will help ensure greater adherence to regulations within the agriculture sector, particularly in the farming industry, which has faced challenges for many years.

He highlighted that smallholder farmers have been facing numerous challenges due to the lack of regulation and enforcement in the sector.

Minister Kawale emphasized that the bill is a crucial step towards better governance in agriculture and will support efforts to enhance agricultural productivity.

He also noted that small-scale farmers, in particular, have been underserved and marginalized in terms of policy support and access to resources.

The second chairperson of the Agricultural Committee in the National Assembly, Ulemu Chilapondwa, also commented on the new development.

Chilapondwa expressed the need to shift focus towards empowering smallholder farmers through more targeted support, unlike the previous focus on larger agricultural companies.

He called for a more inclusive approach that would prioritize the needs of small farmers and ensure they have access to necessary tools and resources.

Once the bill becomes law, it will pave the way for the establishment of a dedicated commission focused on agricultural practices.

This commission will work to ensure that there is strict adherence to agricultural regulations and standards across the sector.

Minister Kawale emphasized that the implementation of this law would mark a significant step forward in organizing and regulating Malawi’s agricultural industry.

The bill, when passed into law, will not only improve compliance with agricultural rules but also streamline processes for better management of resources within the agricultural community.

Through these efforts, the government hopes to foster a more productive and sustainable agricultural environment that benefits all farmers, particularly those in rural and underserved areas.

The proposed commission will serve as an oversight body that ensures there is proper coordination between farmers, agricultural organizations, and the government to achieve the set objectives.

In conclusion, the passing of this bill is expected to be a game-changer for the agricultural sector, offering greater stability, support for smallholder farmers, and an effective regulatory framework to govern agricultural practices in Malawi.
