Newly Malawian recruited teachers down tools over arrears

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawian teachers who were employed in April by government have promised to put tools down by 1 November until the employer pays them their three month salary arrears and rural teacher allowances .

According to the representative of the teachers, Jameson Boti, the teachers were employed in April this year, but for three months they stayed without being paid salaries and rural teacher allowances.

Boti further said that there is also another group of teachers who were employed in June, but have not yet started to withdraw their salaries

All the efforts they made to ask the Government for the unpaid salaries proved futile as it kept postponing dates until now.

Therefore, the teachers have decided to stage a sit in so that their employer can address the concerns.

However, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Justin Saidi, said the Ministry is only waiting for head teachers and Education Division Managers to officially notify it that such teachers really reported for duties before processing the said payment.

In April this year, the Government employed five hundred teachers who were deployed in the rural community day secondary schools. In June, government also employed another group of teachers.
