BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Ministry of Health and Population says no Cholera case has been reported towards the end of 2019 and first week of 2020.
The ministry lauded measures put in place and being implemented in order to prevent cholera in 2019-2020 cholera season.
In a brief update released on January 8, 2020, Joshua Malango, Ministry’s Principal Public Relations Officer says preventive measures have been put in place in order to prevent the spread of the cholera outbreak in several parts of Malawi especially the Lake Shore districts which are frequently affected by the disease.
“The disease that affected a number of people with thousands reported cases and hundreds deaths in Malawi is estimated to affect about 4.0 million people worldwide each year.
“In 2017 – 2018 cholera season, about 939 cases were reported with 32 deaths in all regions of Malawi. The numbers went down in 2018-2019 cholera season with only 26 reported cases and 1 death,” says Malango.
In this cholera season so far, no cholera case has been reported.
He adds, “The ministry has disclosed that Epidemic Management Committees and Rapid Response Teams are currently investigating and responding to any suspected cholera case and disease surveillance have been put in place in all the districts to detect any suspected cholera case.
“The ministry has also revealed that supplies necessary for cholera prevention and control have been made available in all districts. The ministry had added that it will start administering Oral Cholera vaccine districts like Nsanje, Phalombe, Zomba and Machinga”.
