The Nsanje west Member of Parliament (MP) Dr Chidanti Malunga has on Tuesday dumped the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) saying he will be independent, Maravi Post can reveal.
Malunga said the decision was because of the demand he received from his constituency.
“People in my constituency said they don’t want me to continue working with the ruling DPP. So I did not have any choice apart from quitting the party,” said Malunga.

Despite the legislature refusing to make further comments on his decision, some political pundits have described this as a surprise and threat to the ruling party.
“This is strange, we are used to see opposition politicians dumping their parties and join the ruling. We suspect something fishy in Malunga’s decision but the development is a threat to DPP,” said the political expert.
However, DPP acting Secretary General Francis Mphepo said as the ruling party they are not shaken with the development.
Mphepo suspected that the MP had his aim when joining DPP that has not been fulfilled hence the decision.
Recently, about 26 recycled politicians joined DPP at Masintha ground in Lilongwe.
