Of Malawi’s leadership meddling with religious leaders amid ailing economy

4 Min Read

The 2014 tripartite elections results mandated President Peter Mutharika to take the reins of the state on behalf of 17 million Malawians to provide quality health, education, security, justice services, and sustainable environmental management among others.

This is the reason supreme law of the land-Malawi Constitution clearly stipulates that the president mandate is on trust from the people who put them into power through elections to govern the nation.

It is in this regard when that trust is betrayed or compromised by leadership upon failure to meet the electorate’s expectations or campaign promises; the same people are also mandated to question the ability of that leadership.

Just two years and some months in power, President Mutharika’s leadership has been marred with social-economic ills while little progress has been made on the ground, an assertion the executive still disputes.

This is testified through food crisis as maize is not available in Admarc deports ,lack of medical drugs in public hospitals, high inflation and falling of the Malawi Kwacha which has resulted into skyrocketing prices of goods and services.

Consequently, Malawians through various forums including the just ended Public Affairs Committee (PAC)’s All-inclusive conference, Youths demonstration in Mzuzu are demanding President Mutharika and his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government to fix the ailing economy as soon as possible before the situation does get out of hand.

Even, one of the country’s oldest media conglomerate, Times Group, the publisher of The Daily Times, Malawi News, Sunday Times and other subsidiaries including Times TV, Radio, Times Currier and Dzuka Publishing gave a failing grade on President Mutharika and his cabinet in 2015.

Instead of the DPP leadership bagging heads together in order to fix the failing economy, its busy attributing the current situation to the 2015 unfavorable weather patterns (floods, dry spell) and the famous 2013 cash gate scandal. How long will Mutharika and his cohorts going to give Malawians excuses based on these two issues which can be addressed through intensification and intensive irrigation farming while on the other side using and spending the hard earned taxes within means?

In a bid to divert the general public attention from the economic mess DPP government has inflicted on Malawians, staged coup allegation on opposition parties, chiefs, state-controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and Propped-DPP online publication are being used to manipulate the starving nation mind instead of getting things fixed.

For instance, just a week ago on Saturday, March 12, during the ground breaking ceremony of Dae Yang Teaching University hospital in the capital Lilongwe President Mutharika went to town accusing Prophet TB Joshua for always prophesizing the death of President arguing that the man of God was “crooked” and uses “false prophecy to raise money. The President used this forum wrongly.

The slur remarks on the Nigerian Prophet T.B Joshua did not go well with EAM through its Secretary General, Reverend Francis Mkandawire who condemned Malawian politicians including Mutharika to stop from commenting on spiritual matters which he said were not in their domain.

Not only is that the current leadership is fighting with religious leaders. This past week just after the sudden death of gospel song bird, Grace Chinga, the same DPP led government through Malawi Voice-Online Publication whose editor-Justice Mponda, happened to be one of the State House Press Officers has been carrying slanderous article alleging that the South Africa-Malawian based Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church had a hand in the death of Chinga.

This comes amid uncertainty with DPP rank and file on how to suffocate Prophet Bushiri efforts in bailing out starving Malawians with maize donation following food crisis hitting hard the nation as many families are spending sleepless nights at Admarc deports.

Despite President Mutharika effort to meddle the man of God’s effort connecting his charity work to political ambition and satanic maneuvering, Bushiri has bitten all old to come home from the rain bow nation in order to feed God’s children as over five thousands Malawians have benefitted the responsibility the DPP leadership is failing to do.

Off-course, we might not know fully the spiritual prowess Prophet Bushiri use or up to for the worth, possession he has but by just rescuing hungry Malawians with the little he has, it’s a praising matter to God that his children will always have something to eat.

So, this fight against good Samaritans is a nonstarter. Leave the men of God do their work while the DPP government is failing to feed its people, unable to provide enough drugs in hospitals, failing to stabilize the Kwacha.

The role of the media should be to provide objective information for the general public,  to be in the know not being used as the political too to intimidate and victimize innocent souls in order to keep on reaping the poor from the hard earned tax-payers money.
