Lilongwe, June 19, 2015: President Professor Peter Mutharika Thursday said many foreign Investors have shown interest to invest in various economic sectors of the country as one way of boosting foreign exchange between Malawi and other African countries.
Mutharika disclosed this during a press briefing at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe after he attended a Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) Summit in Egypt and SADC Heads of State Summit in South Africa in June this year.
The President said he had a lot of discussions with many business players from other countries during the two summits who he said were interested to invest in the country.
“I had a lot of negotiations with other countries on how we can facilitate smooth Free Trade Area market because common market is very important for our economic growth,” said the President.
Mutharika however said there is need for industrialization and production of quality goods for sale if the country was to economically benefit from the Free Trade Area Market.
The President said Government has already started taking positive steps in promoting investment opportunities to allow more foreign investors to invest in various sectors in the country.
“Malawi as a country needs to produce high quality value added goods for export to other countries as a way of boosting our economic growth,” he said.
On Security, the President assured both local and other African investors that government would train more Police Officers to provide security to people’s lives and their property.
Mutharika expressed happiness with the way the police have been responding to recent series of armed robberies in the country.
Recently some suspected armed robbers were intercepted by police in an attempt to steal at Kanengo Puma Filling Station.
Ealier, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Helen Clark held a courtesy call to President Mutharika where they discussed a number of development issues.
Clark said some of the issues which she discussed with the President were how UNDP could further support in the areas of Public Sector Reform Programmes, Disaster Risk Management, Electoral Reforms and the National Identity Registration project.
She therefore pledged UNDP’S continued support to the Malawi Government towards implementation of good governance programmes.
