MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-A tragic family dispute in Mangochi has ended in death after a 26-year-old man allegedly killed his own biological father during a fight over a bag of rice.
Speaking with Maravi Post publication, Mangochi Police spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi, confirmed the arrest of White Mussa following the death of his 57-year-old father, George Mussah Mkumba, at Maluwa 2 Village under Traditional Authority Chowe in Mangochi District.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspect had earlier separated from his wife and moved back to stay with his parents at their family home.
Daudi, said the situation changed after Mussa reportedly reconciled with his wife without informing his parents before returning to collect his belongings from his father’s house.
Upon arrival, the suspect allegedly demanded several items he claimed belonged to him, including a bag of rice that was reportedly owned by the deceased.
Police reports indicate that the father refused to hand over the rice, triggering a heated argument which later turned violent between the two family members.
During the confrontation, Mussa is alleged to have struck his father on the head with a stick before pushing him to the ground, causing him to collapse unconscious.
The matter was quickly reported to Mangochi Police Station and officers rushed the victim to Mangochi District Hospital for urgent medical attention.
However, doctors at the hospital pronounced George Mussah Mkumba dead upon arrival.
A postmortem examination later revealed that the victim died due to blockage of the airway after choking, medically known as aspiration pneumonia, which was linked to injuries sustained during the assault.
Police say the suspect will soon appear before court to answer a murder charge contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code once all necessary paperwork is completed.
Meanwhile, Mangochi Police have appealed to members of the public to resolve disagreements peacefully and avoid violence, warning that domestic disputes can easily turn deadly when anger is not controlled.
