Student Driven Solutions, an organization which empowers girls to solve global problems in local ways, says it has designed a comprehensive and innovative curriculum in the country to help secondary school girls in various communities be financially empowered.
Speaking in an interview, the founder of the organization, Rebecca Gross said the program is aiming at providing Malawi girls with skills and confidence necessary to address challenges in their respective communities.
“Our Mission is to provide Malawi’s secondary school girls with the skills and confidence necessary to address challenges in their communities through an integrated business and advocacy program me”, Rebecca Gross said.
Miss Gross further said the solutions are based on financial literacy education coupled with hands-on community projects conceived by the students. Gross added that the organization has roped in University student mentors to provide supervision and guidance to the girls throughout the program.
“University student mentors will supervise and guide the girls and that they will be asked to identify a challenge in their communities so that they can brainstorm a viable solution and develop a plan of action”. Explained Miss Gross.
The program curriculum which has currently taken ground in Zomba city where 30 girls have registered, will be running for a 20-week period.
Statistics show that most girls in the country do not go further with their education, a development which makes them not to be financially independent hence being vulnerable to HIV and AIDS infections.
Some of the subjects the student will be drilled are; sustainable development, problem solving. money and banking, determining revenue and expenses and financial responsibility, among others.
