Running mates crucial for the 2019 elections

President Mutharika’s electoral victory a done deal-Mchacha

Written by Patseni Mauka

Before experiencing the death of a president in office, Malawians only concentrated on the name and character of the presidential candidate to decide who to vote for in an election. The name of a running mate was not that crucial. Not many people thought an entire president could die in Malawi.

Joyce Banda and Bingu Campaigning

When former President Bingu Wa Mutharika, a great achiever in his first term as president, selected Joyce Banda as his running mate for his second bid for the presidency, many people concentrated on Bingu’s impeccable achievements. They voted for the pair.

Unfortunately, Bingu died with two years before the end of his second term and Joyce Banda took over. The succession process was a nightmare for the country. Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) didn’t want her to take over because being a family party, they wanted Bingu’s brother Peter to succeed him. Officially, they said Joyce Banda could not take over because she had formed her own party while still vice president.

On the other hand, those that agreed that Banda was constitutionally the right person to replace the departed president, faced the reality of having Joyce Banda becoming president regardless of the fact that Bingu chose her as a running mate mainly because of the women’s vote and not any known credentials.

Notwithstanding anybody’s views on whether she was constitutionally entitled to become president or whether she was competent enough to be president, Joyce Banda was sworn in as president in April 2012.

As expected by most people, her performance was below average and she oversaw heavy devaluation of the Kwacha and increase in cost of living. But her famous legacy is the cashgate financial scandal. Billions of taxpayers money were stolen under her watch and participation.

The lesson learned from Joyce Banda’s ascendancy to power is that anything can happen even to a president. It is therefore important to scrutinize not only presidential candidates but their running mates as well to avoid ending up with an incompetent or thieving president.

President Peter Mutharika’s running mate, Everton Chimulilenji, is a big flop. He is totally unqualified to be a vice president. Chimulilenji doesn’t posses any leadership qualities. Crucial among the qualities he doesn’t have is vision for Malawi, mental capacity for problem solving and potential to motivate professionals in different fields of the Malawi economy.

Most DPP members were disappointed with Mutharika’s choice of running mate such that the presentation of nomination papers by the DPP leader, Professor Peter Mutharika, turned into a somber ceremony for the party.

Chimulilenji’s main focus now is assuring Mutharika that he will be nothing but a puppet. He wants Mutharika to know that he has no presidential ambition and that his job is doing everything that Mutharika tells him without questioning.

In his many years as a member of parliament, I have never heard him speaking and articulating issues with brilliance of a man who should be vice president and potential president. At parliamentary level, he has no achievements of national importance that I know.

Sidik Mia and Chakwera
MCP President Lazarous Chakwera with his Vice President during the Convention in Lilongwe – Pic by Abel Ikilon

There is very little Lazarus Chakwera’s running mate, Sidik Mia, can show as his achievements for Malawi as a politician for the 15 years he has been active. Most achievements are personal and relate to his ability to successfully hoodwink leaders and followers of different parties into giving him senior party positions and ministerial posts.

Mia uses his wealth to hide his mediocre style of leadership and burning ambition to become president of Malawi. In Joyce Banda’s PP, Mia boot-licked and spent his way to the vice presidency of the party. He then went on a spending spree to convince Joyce Banda to choose him as his running mate.

In one of the embarrassing episodes of desperation, at a PP rally in Chilomoni, he instructed women to vote for a fellow woman, Joyce Banda. He told the women that if they don’t vote for Joyce Banda, they should consider themselves witches! Joyce Banda who was sitting just close to Mia was seen with a face of disapproval and embarrassment.

Saulos ChilimaOn the other hand, Dr Micheal Usi is a new politician. He joined politics less than a year ago. He has no financial scandals. He is known for speaking his mind and will be of great help to UTM’s presidential candidate Dr Saulos Chilima who needs people who can advise him professionally and not just praise singers.

Dr Usi has one clear advantage over his rivals; development expertise. As former Country Director for ADRA Malawi, Usi has hands-on experience on areas like food security, nutrition, and economic empowerment. His hands-on approach to leadership is what made him to include himself among the actors who have been at the centre of Tikuferanji, a radio and television drama series.

Tikuferanji’s objective is to address Malawi’s current affairs and other issues that affect day to day life of Malawians. Tikuferenji is not just a sewero. It is a communication tool for different issues that affect Malawi’s development. Dr Usi is just the right candidate who feels strongly about various issues affecting Malawi.

In my opinion, the Chilima and Usi pair is the best combination that Malawi has ever had. It is a good mix of development and leadership experience coupled with high education, knowledge of the issues that affect Malawi and track record of achievements in both public and private sector.

MCP Beyond 2019, that should be the focus – Part 1

By Kelvin Sulugwe

Of late, I have taken a great interest in Malawi politics, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in particular. I have few reasons for this and one of them is the fact that I belong to the party (first by birth, later by choice).

My stomach burns with anger now. We have overstayed in opposition and 2019 is do or die.
Unfortunately, the road keeps getting darker, harsher, heavier and whatever adjective that best describes it. Such is politics.

It is my wish to see MCP win 2019 elections, but on top of that, it is my desire to see progress in Malawi. As it stands, we are getting most things very wrong. I will share my views and my messages are always to my peers.

Let me start with Times Media Group. I am not sure what they are really up to, but it is an open secret that they are the main propaganda powerhouse for MCP.

Unfortunately, they seem to be overdoing it and it is very uninteresting now. The propaganda being done by the powerhouse has no creativity and is very similar to that we see on the national broadcaster, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

Now, we imagine, these are the very same people who will then go to MBC should MCP make it 2019. What change will there be at MBC? Sometimes, propaganda can also yield negative results, as is the case of MBC now.

Simply put, the propaganda that MBC offered during Bright Malopa’s time was the best we have seen in Malawi. Truth be told, that time, you couldn’t ignore MBC and some of their propaganda programs such as Makiyolobasi went viral that even people requested DVDs and all.

Make no mistake, a good number of us blindly enjoyed such programs without openly acknowledging the damage to the likes of Tembo and Muluzi. The sarcasm and satirical facts made it hard for the two politicians to convince the nation during campaign. It worked for the better and we witnessed the results. I even voted for Bingu and DPP myself, so did most of you.

Beyond that, the strategy had over-lived and started getting boring. In short, Times Group is simply a twin brother of the current MBC. Their propaganda for MCP is so evident and boring. We will see what happens. That is usually the problem when propaganda is being done by people serving their stomachs and not seeing the vision.

Going to Sidik Mia, with all due respect, he is the right catch for the party but not the best man for the position of Vice President. Lets be honest, he does not command the South Region, in fact, no one does. If we had a giant in the South it would have been Muluzi, but look what happened to his own party and his own son in 2014.

Does MCP need a giant in Southern Region? I disagree, there is something better we need on top of Sidik Mia. I will stand by what I say even though it means being seen as a traitor to the party and I know this post might circulate in some party whatsapp groups, when it does, I want you to understand this point.
Malawi will never be safe with Sidik Mia as Vice President. Corruption will become rampant like we saw in PP and all.

Here is a point, when an individual spends more of his personal money during campaign, he is simply holding the party and its leadership to ransom. If MCP wins with Sidik Mia as vice president, without beating about the bush, his first mission will be to boost his businesses and enrich himself to compensate what he is loosing now in supporting party activities.

Some of us really wish the best for MCP, but on top of MCP, we wish the best for Malawi. We have got it all wrong on Sidik Mia and dont be surprised when we suffer humiliation in Southern Region come 2019. He is but a fraction of a winning strategy, its pity to make him the whole strategy.

As a diehard member, I am here to expose the holes in decisions such as that of Sidik Mia being glorified at the expense of the blood of those who have been there for the party in thick and thin. We need to sit down and understand the opposing views. This is not a century of dictatorship and abuse.

We are sober people, not serving our stomachs, but the well-being of the party and Malawi. In 2014, DPP managed to beat us very clean from opposition, to beat them this time around, we will need to do things differently not the usual overused strategies.

Now, talking of the in-fights and central region focus, I will write again. These are my views and represents my understanding. Contrary views to mine are welcome. I promote mature debate.

YPU calls for youth quota in political parties

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost) – The Young Politician Union of Malawi (YPU) this week emphasised the need for the country’s political parties to establish quota components for young people in their constitutions.

The idea aims at incorporating young people’s ideas for effective contribution towards political dispensation ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The call comes amid the lack of proper youth wing structures in all the country’s political parties’ constitution where young people’s agendas are not firstly prioritized.

In an exclusive interview with The Maravi Post upon arrival from this year’s African Union governance architecture conference that was held in Arusha, Tanzania, Clement Makuwa, YPU’s President, highlighted that it was disheartening to observe that young people are not genuinely participating in political development, particularly in SADC countries like Malawi.

Makuwa disclosed that the conference spelt out with critical areas that need to be considered, including political parties’ agenda for young people, full participation of youth in politics, and political parties call to have quota components in their constitution for young people.

The youth union leader said that Eastern African countries are advancing youth agendas in political parties’ constitution, which is not the same case in SADC states.

He added that most young in the SADC region, particularly in Malawi, are not interested in developmental politics after their needs are not met by political parties once they are in power.

Makuwa therefore, appealed for introduction of quota components in malawian parties’ constitutions, in which youth agendas will be embraced at all times.

“It’s sad that most young people who happen to constitute large percent of African’s states, Malawi inclusive, have shunned developmental politics after political parties in power fail to meet their needs. This is sad for the future democracy.

“Malawi has young people who have the potential and are ready to invigorate development, but due to frustration coupled with unemployment levels, they don’t take part in politics.

“Therefore, as the nation approaches the 2019 elections, we urge political parties to embrace full young people participation in the constitution that their agendas are fulfilled,” Makuwa said.

YPU of Malawi has been instrumental in electoral processes by mobilising young people to participate democratic politics through attainment of critical positions in the society including ward councillors, Members of Parliament (MPs) among others.

Malawi’s population is youthful, which contributes to 70%, but young people are not involvement in meaningful economic activities including agriculture through greenbelt initiative, entrepreneurship which are the ingredients for the country’s economic growth.
