MZUZU-(MANA)-President Lazarus Chakwera says his administration will turn around the outlook of Mzuzu City if given another mandate through the ballot on September 16, 2025.
Chakwera was speaking at a whistle stop rally at Area 1B Market in Mzuzu City, on Friday.
Chakwera, who is also presidential candidate for Malawi Congress Party (MCP), said the party’s manifesto includes plans to construct double lane highways and flyovers in Mzuzu City.
“We want to give Mzuzu a better look befitting a city. We have already started development projects in the city, including construction of Mzuzu Youth Center which is nearing completion, and a sophisticated library at Mzuzu University.
He urged people in Mzuzu to vote for him on September 16, 2025, so that his administration should complete development projects already initiated by his administration in Mzuzu City and across the country.
“During my administration, the country was hit by various disasters including cyclones, COVID 19 and the worst cholera outbreak the country has ever had, however, we have still been able to lay a solid foundation for development,” he said.
MCP shadow Member of Parliament for Mzuzu City North Constituency, Mafumu Mkandawire, urged people to vote for Chakwera, saying he is a caring and development oriented leader.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced plans to conduct a supplementary voter registration exercise in various councils across the country.
The decision was made following a review of the conduct of the three phases of voter registration for the 2025 General Election.
According to a public statement issued by the MEC, the supplementary registration exercise will target eligible voters who were unable to register during the initial phases due to various reasons. The exercise is expected to commence soon, with specific dates and modalities to be communicated by the Commission.
Under Phase 1, the supplementary registration will be conducted in 12 councils, including Chitipa, Karonga, Mzuzu City, and Nkhotakota. Phase 2 will cover 14 councils, including Nkhata Bay, Rumphi, and Zomba City. Phase 3 will comprise 8 councils, including Lilongwe, Mangochi, and Chikwawa.
The MEC has emphasized that the supplementary registration exercise will only target eligible voters who were unable to register during the initial phases and will not involve fresh civil registration by the National Registration Bureau (NRB) at voter registration centers.
The Commission has also assured that NRB staff will be present to provide identification and verification services for applicants who may have challenges with their proof of national registration.
The supplementary voter registration exercise is expected to provide an opportunity for eligible voters to register and exercise their right to vote in the upcoming 2025 General Election.
Mzuzu residents bemoan power outage on Christmas day
Mzuzu-(MaraviPost)—Residents in the Northern Region City of Mzuzu have bemoaned day long black out in the city and almost the whole region on the Christmas day.
The day which fell on Friday started on a promising note in terms of electricity but alas! At around 7 o’clock in the morning load shedding showed its ugly face and it persisted almost throughout the day.
A snapshot survey which Maravi Post conducted in some townships of the city revealed that most residents were angry and disappointed with Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) for not providing them with power on a day they had to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
One Tuntufye Ng’ambi who stays in Chimaliro Township said it was disturbing to see that there was no power on Christmas day.
“Imagine I went to church with hope that I would dance to songs sung by our praise team using sound equipment; only to be informed that they would not be able to play the equipment because of power failure. Government has to do something serious about this situation as per their promises during the campaign period,” ranted Ng’ambi.
Her sentiments were echoed by Chimwemwe Zulu, a Chibavi Township resident who said on Christmas day, he enjoys watching Christian films; especially those that chronicle the birth of Jesus Christ, but he would not be able to do so as there was load shedding throughout the day and the region.
Zulu expressed: “You see, on a day like this one, most us like to just stay at home and enjoy ourselves by watching firms of Jesus Christ, but now, there is no power since morning and we have no idea what time it will come back. This is very unfair.
“ Is it because the top government officials do not experience black outs like we, the commoners, do? They would have a heart to work on this problem once and for all.”
Other residents at townships like Luwinga, Zolozolo, Ekwendeni and Area 4 were only seen gallivanting along the streets with no any hope of power resumption the soonest.
On Wednesday this week, Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) took a swipe at Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) for announcing that it would be unable to provide reliable electricity to Malawians during the Christmas and New Year festivity.
In a press statement, Cama said: “Consumers are tired and angry with poor service delivery excuses by EGENCO and Consumers for a long time have questioned whether there is any supervision and monitoring of parastatals like EGENCO which continues to disappoint its Consumers and embarrass Government for its failure to deliver better services.
“We are, therefore, appealing to Government to stop treating EGENCO with kid gloves and ensure that the current public sector reforms are adding value to the operations of this key parastatal.”
Unreliability of electricity in Malawi is a serious challenge, which has on innumerable occasions scared foreign investors away.
However, the current Tonse government promised to put this incessant problem to sleep once voted into power.
Malawians are yet to start enjoying the fruits of the promise.
Mzuzu-(Marapost)—Vice President Saulos Chilima’s visit to Mzuzu City on Tuesday has revealed serious inefficiencies that disqualify it from even being called a city.
Chilima, who is currently engaging the Chief Executive Officers of parastatal Organisations and Directors of Finance in the Northern Region on his civil service reforms drive, has, for instance, been appalled by poor waste management in the city.
The Vice President has, however, suggested to Mzuzu Council to introduce a ‘Keep Mzuzu City Clean Initiative’ as one way of keeping up the city’s beauty.
Chilima was also displeased with the state of Mzuzu Airport which has the capacity to harbour big aircrafts that can export agricultural produce such as beef and coffee; but it is currently marked by footpaths created by passersby and animals which are tethered within the airport premises. He however, suggested to have the airport fenced up in the shortest possible period of time.
Commenting on the development, team leader for public sector reforms, Seodi White, said everyone needs to account for the job they do within the civil service.
“At this point in time, to be honest, everything is urgent. When you look at the state of our cities and consider where we have come from, we just need to push it. So, how we make sure that we push it is that we have to enhance and be clear about individual performance in the public service. This is a quickest thing that’s missing. We have to know, what is XYZ? What is Seodi White doing from day 1 to 30? And how can she be made accountable for that? That way, if you put me in charge, I will know I have an accountability plan which I will have to account to my superiors,” said White.
On his part, Mzuzu City Council Chief Executive Officer, Gomezgani Nyasulu, said the city will engage Mzuzu University on how they can manage the waste by generating energy out of it.
On Wednesday, the Vice President will engage the northern region based private sector small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on how best they can improve service delivery.
Since his appointment as the Minister of Economic Development and Public Sector Reforms, Chilima has been engaging heads of parastatals and Directors of Finance in all the major regions of the country in order to boost service delivery in both public and private sectors of the economy.
Luke International donates desks to schools in Mzuzu
In an effort to minimise shortage of desks in primary schools in Mzuzu City, Luke International has donated 120 desks worth K5 million.
Speaking during a handover ceremony, Luke International Community Development Deputy Manager, Tina Dzama, said it is quite displeasing to see learners receiving lessons while seated on the floor due to lack of desks.
Dzama said Luke International decided to make the donation after realising that most public schools in Mzuzu City have a common challenge of lack of desks.
“When we visited the schools, we identified some of the challenges the schools are facing, but at the same time we observed that some of these schools are examination centres so when writing exams, the schools are struggling to accommodate other learners due to lack of desks,” Dzama said.
While acknowledging the initiative, Head teacher for St. Augustine Primary School, Rose Malirana, said the donation is a shot in the arm as the school had very few desks, a situation which rendered most learners sitting on the floor during lessons and examinations.
Malirana said: “we had 94 desks which are not enough because we have 1150. So, we have a shortage and in some classes, some learners are sitting on the floor.”
On his part, District Education Manager for Mzimba North, Cossam Mpande, asked the head teachers whose schools have benefited from the donation to take good care of the desks and renovate them whenever they are damaged.
Apart from St. Augustine Primary School, St. Peter’s Primary and Moyale Barracks Primary Schools also received the desks.
Mzuzu vendors to express their anger by dumping wastes at senior council boss’ office
MZUZU-(MaraviPost)–Angry vendors and councilors of Mzuzu, the green city of Malawi in the northern, have threatened to dump the waste materials from the Kaunjika market to the office of the Director of the Public Works.
Confirming the development, one of the organizers councilor Gabito Mwaungulu of Chibavi west said this is because of failure of the council to remove the wastes at the Kaunjika office.
“We have made our decision and we shall do,” said Mwaungulu.
According to him they have been meeting with the council asking them to clean the Kaunjika market but to no avail.
“The Kaunjika site is in very pathetic. The area should not be treated as if vendors who are using it are not paying tax,” said
However, effort to talk to the spokesperson for Mzuzu city Karen Msiska proved futile.
In a related development, vendors in Karonga have threatened to boycott paying tax if the council fails to clean the market accordingly.
Chairperson for Karonga main market Goodwin Ghambi confirmed in an interview.
He said they will hire people to clean the market on their own using the money they were expected to pay tax.
