By Lusekero Mhango

KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa has underscored the significance of unity and respect as fundamental pillars for advancing development in both districts and the broader national context.

The Paramount made the call at his residence following a visit by the recently installed Traditional Authority (T.A) Ntalire of Chitipa accompanied by senior chiefs to receive blessings from the Paramount Chief.

In an interview, the chief highlighted that fostering love, unity and respect are essential elements for the two districts and the nation-building.

Adding that it’s only through love, unity and respect, that the strength to shape a brighter tomorrow can be found.

“If we love one another, if we respect one another, and if we are united development follows hence let’s embrace togetherness as the key to progress and success,” said his royal highness.

Turning to the visit of T/A Ntalire, the paramount expressed gratitude to the newly installed Chief for showing love and unity to come and see him and receive his blessings.

On his part, Senior Chief Kameme from Chitipa said their visit to the Paramount Chief residents was designed to promote the shared culture and history of the two districts.

“Our history tells us that Karonga and Chitipa natives are one people hence our coming to keep our traditions, shared culture, beliefs, and values between the two districts,” he explained.

Traditional dances spiced up the visit and notable chiefs who accompanied T/A Ntalire included Senior Chiefs Kameme and Mwenewenya among others.

Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa districts has advised students of Marianist Initiative for Rural Artisans Christian Life and Education (MIRACLE) technical college in Karonga district not to desist from being used by greedy politicians in the forth coming political campaigns in readiness for the May 21 tripartite polls if they are to grow in productive citizens.

Kyungu offered this piece of advice Saturday afternoon when he took time off his busy schedule to attend the closing ceremony of the college’s week long cultural week whereby students at the institution were given an opportunity to display their cultural values through dressing, language and traditional dances.

In his speech as a guest of honour, the Paramount Chief warned the students without mincing words not to form school political party groups that will be used by greedy politicians during campaign which is due to open on March 20 to castigate or disrupt other party meetings.

“Let me take this opportunity to urge you and any other student in Malawi not to be used during campaign by politicians. They will entice you with money to buy beer to disturb their opponents? rallies or offer them morale during their political party meetings, say no that.

“This is not your time for politics. Right now concentrate on your studies and excel in life as education is power that will liberate you from the miserable conditions as also you have a future to shape. Time for politics is coming but not now”, Kyungu said.

He also issued a stern warning to male teachers against exploiting and abusing students by dangling carrots to mess up with their education, saying as a HE4SHE champion he will not tolerate any deplorable behavior that would ruin a girl child’s future.

“As a traditional leader myself and a HE4SHE champion, I will not fold my arms and watch teachers who take advantage of girls poverty and entice them with money in the process destroying their education neither will I clap hands for harmful cultural beliefs such as kuthola minga and kutsatsa fumbi at the expense of a girl child,” Kyungu said.

Taking her turn, the college’s Principle Wanangwa Sichone said her school conducts this cultural event annually as one way of unifying students through various activities in terms of culture.

She said the country is blessed with very rich cultural values that when brought together and preserved are capable of developing Malawi through foreign currency brought by tourists.

“These activities give our students an opportunity to tell us who they are, where they are from and what they are capable of doing. We are glad that during this week we were able to interact in various languages that are spoken in Malawi, students were able to sing and dance traditional dances such as gule wamkulu, ingoma, beni, mwinowe, manganje and many more from across Malawi,” Sichone said.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Messiah Kawiya hailed the school administration for the week that according to him had taught all students cultural lessons that no any other culture is superior to the other and that they will cherish for the event for years to come.

MIRACLE technical college is a Catholic institution under Karonga diocese that is run by Marianists brothers with the enrollment of about five thousand students.

DPP critics are fools- Paramount Chief Kyungu

KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa has said people who are bent on pointing at flaws of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government are fools.

Speaking during the official inauguration of the MK610 million Karonga Stadium on Sunday, Kyungu said such people have eyes but are not able to see the good that the current administration is doing for the country.

The Ngonde leader reiterated that the government critics do not wish this country well, arguing if they did, they would advise the government constructively instead of adopting what he termed a militant approach.

But social commentator Moses Mkandawire of Church and Society in the Livingstonia Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian has described the sentiments as unacceptable and demeaning to the traditional leadership structure.

“I say time and time again that those who have eyes to see but pretend that they are not seeing [any development initiatives championed by the government] are fools. If God has given you eyes, use them to see, that is human nature.

“We must appreciate what the government is doing. When it is not doing enough, there must be a way of advising them. Not wholesale criticism. We, the people of Karonga, do not buy into that because even our elderly are able to see the development that the government is doing,” he added.

Kyungu’s sentiments have not gone down well with some quarters, with Mkandawire saying the paramount chief does not understand leadership and democracy.

He said Kyungu should be the first to appreciate that a good leader should be able to listen and embrace a diversity of opinion, saying that is what builds a nation.

“Let him learn from masters of traditional leadership like Chikulamayembe. That is a senior position and he is supposed to motivate his subjects. Such divisive remarks should not come from someone of his calibre,” Mkandawire said.

He added that democracy entails tolerance and peaceful coexistence among different people.

Mkandawire then warned that, as the political climate slowly turns volatile as 2019 approaches, traditional leaders should avoid making statements that can cause divisions and confusion among their subjects.
