Silver increase chances for defending TNM Super League

….Ekhaya 0-1 Silver….

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Silver Strikers boosted their hopes of defending the Super League title with a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory over Ekhaya FC at Mpira Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bankers showed determination, discipline and tactical maturity to secure maximum points away from home.

The visitors struck early, taking the lead just six minutes into the match through Emmanuel Allan, who calmly slotted home to silence the home supporters.

The goal set the tone for Silver, who dominated the early exchanges, especially down the left flank where Maonga, Duwe and Vunga combined effectively to unsettle Ekhaya’s defence.

Despite Silver’s strong start, Ekhaya responded with intent.

The team’s biggest threat in the first half came in the 17th minute when Lingu fired a powerful 25-yard effort that forced goalkeeper Chikooka into a brilliant fingertip save.

Silver, however remained composed at the back and cleared the resulting corner with ease.

Ekhaya continued pushing and their penalty appeal in the 45th minute sparked controversy when Kaponya went down in the box but referee Duncan Lengani waved play on, judging the challenge to be a fair shoulder-to-shoulder duel.

Silver maintained their slender 1-0 lead going into the break.

The hosts came out with more urgency in the second half, creating several chances but failing to apply the finishing touch. Their wastefulness in front of goal proved costly, as Silver Strikers stayed organised and focused on game management to protect their early advantage.

The match ended 1-0, with Allan’s early strike proving decisive. Alick Lungu earned the Man of the Match award.

After the game, Ekhaya coach Enos Chatama lamented his side’s missed opportunities, saying it was clear the team still struggles with converting chances.

Meanwhile, Silver Strikers assistant coach Mapopa Msukwa praised his players for making use of the chances they created but reminded them that the fight for the league title remains far from over.

The win pushes Silver Strikers to 56 points from 26 matches, strengthening their position in third place, while Ekhaya remain seventh with 39 points from 27 games.

Silver Strikers eye CAF Champions League progress after vital away draw

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Silver Strikers have given themselves a strong chance of advancing to the next stage of the CAF Champions League following a hard fought 1-1 draw against Elgeco Plus FC of Madagascar in the first leg of their preliminary round tie on Sunday.

The encounter, played at the Cote Do’r National Sports Complex in Mauritius, saw both sides battle for dominance with Elgeco Plus taking an early lead in the 16th minute after a defensive lapse by the Malawian side.

The hosts looked the stronger team in the opening stages and maintained their advantage heading into halftime, leaving Silver Strikers with work to do in the second half.

Silver, popularly known as The Central Bankers, returned from the break with renewed determination.

The team’s persistence paid off in the 54th minute when former Chitipa United star Andrew Joseph leveled the score.

Joseph reacted quickly to a loose ball after a clever pass from Dan Sandukira, slotting home to bring Silver back into the game and silence the vocal Elgeco Plus supporters.

From that point on, the match became a tactical battle with both sides creating chances but failing to find a winner.

Silver’s goalkeeper George Chikooka produced a couple of crucial saves to keep the scoreline intact while the Malawian defense, led by experienced center-back Nickson Mwase, stood firm under pressure.

Silver’s technical panel, led by head coach Edson Kadenge, praised the team’s resilience and fighting spirit after the match and he noted that the away goal could prove decisive in the second leg, which will be played at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on September 27, 2025.

Elgeco Plus, on the other hand, are no strangers to continental football and are expected to fight back strongly in Lilongwe.

Their coach hinted after the match that his side will adopt a more attacking approach in the return leg as they look to overturn the away goal deficit.

Thokozani Chimbali; Claims receiving death threats

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The wedding between Thokozani Chimbali, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Silver Strikers FC and the team has ended in a bad note.

The team has sent Chimbali on leave pending the expiry of his contract which come to end on March 31, 2023 this year will not be renewed following the failure to bury the hatchet which erupted between the CEO and supporters.

The supporters have been accusing Chimbali of making team’s decisions on his own.

One of the decisions including the release of some players such as Blessings Tembo, Frank Banda, Taonga Chimodzi.

The supporters have been forcing the boss to step down from his post, days ago they sealed the offices at area 47 and chased Chimbali. The board has resolved to place Chimbali on leave pending his contract expirery.

But before the release of the letter which has been signed by Peter Masiye, the Company Secretary, Thokozani Chimbali had already written on his Facebook page that he has decided to take a leave as he is receiving death threats from suspected supporters.

“Silver Strikers is my home but when your life is at stake, consider your family first. My contract ends onMarch 30, 2023 with the company and I have asked the board not to renew it.

“In meantime I have decided to take a leave till end of my contract. Don’t take death threats lightly”, Chimbali wrote.

Meanwhile, the team has appointed Faith Mzungu as acting Chief Executive Officer until a new CEO is recruited.

Silver Strikers FC has performed badly in the recent past that technical panel has for several times been changed with the inclusion of Daniel Kabwe.

Silver Strikers FC fires head coach Daniel Kabwe over team’s poor performance

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-One of the TNM Super League teams Silver Strikers FC has with immediate effect booted out its Head Coach Daniel Kabwe from his duties over the team’s poor performance.

Daniel Kabwe sacked as Strikers Coach

In a statement released on Saturday July 30, 2022, the team says this means the current interim of the coaching panel led by Acting Head Coach Leo Mpulura will be maintained until furher communication from the club.

The statement in part reads; “Coach Daniel Kabwe will be remembered for winning the FDH Bank Cup, finishing second in the 2020/2021 league season and as runners up of the Airtel top 8.”

The Bankers are 16 pointa behind TNM Super League log table leaders Nyasa Big Bullets and were recenly knocked out of the FDH Bank Cup by Dedza Dynamos Football Club.

Silver Strikers’s haul of 26 points after their 16 league games is worst at this stage of the season in many years.

At this stage last season, the Bankers were top of the log table with 38 points and nearly won the championship but bowed down to pressure exerted by Bullets who ended up winning the title.

Kabwe joined the Central Bankers in February 2020 on a two-year contract.

However, after the expiry of the deal, the club offered him a one-year contract extension after impressive performance in the 2020-21 season.

Silver Strikers clinch FDH Bank Trophy

Silver Strikers clinch FDH Bank Trophy

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—When expatriate Daniel Kabwe was given the job of reviving Silver Strikers at the end of January last year, the club’s supporters expected nothing but a silverware more especially the TNM Super League which was last lifted by the Central bankers in 2014. However, Kabwe failed to meet expectations of the Capital City giants in the TNM Super League and he was on the verge of being sent parking. The supporters were furious.

Not anymore.  Kabwe applied the final brush strokes to his renaissance masterpiece, out-manoeuvring his fellow foreign based coach Caristo Pasuwa of Nyasa Big Bullets in the inaugural prestigious FDH Bank Cup. He went on to humiliate Mighty Wanderers in the semifinals before comfortably clinching the trophy on Friday as they played Ekwendeni Hammers at the Bingu National Stadium.

Though Ekwendeni stepped into the pitch with much confidence, experience separated men from boys. The Bankers, having reached the final stage through a rough road, it was ludicrous for someone to predict the game in favour of the flight league debutants.

Led by veteran defender Harry Nyirenda, the Northern region stars were the first to tear apart the Silver defence but goalkeeper Charles Thom was just equal to the task, sending a statement of intent to the technical panel.

Chelsea defended like demons to snuff out Ekwendeni Hammers but this was a perfectly calibrated triumph, built upon a structured attacking approach, and illuminated by the smoothness of Kabwe’s technique.

Just 10 minutes into the game, Silver got organized and started tormenting the lads in all departments. Nickson Mwase led the defence, Taonga Chimodzi kept the engine boiling as Stain Davie and Frank Banda gave tough time the Harry Nyirenda led defence.

The Capital City giants scored a goal in each half through Frank Banda and Stain Davie respectively. The two goals were enough to send the Bankers into wild celebration.

Silver defeated Immigration FC, Moyale Barracks before disposing Blantyre based giants Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers to reach the finals.

Ekwendeni Hammers only faced Ntopwa FC as a relatively strong team. Their other three opponents Airborne Rangers, Wanderers Reserve and Rumphi United were all drawn from premier division sides.

The trophy is a relief for Silver Strikers as they have missed the TNM Super League championship in a season where they had once led by eight points heading into the second round.

Despite facing small team on their way to the finals, Ekwendeni Hammers also have all the reasons to smile and celebrate as reaching the finals in their maiden season wasn’t a mean achievement.

Silver went away with MK25 million Ekwendeni pocketed MK8 million for finishing as runners up.

Both Wanderers and Rumphi United will receive MK2 million each for reaching the last four of the tournament.

FDH Bank: Charles Thom shines as Silver Strikers beat Bullets to set a date with Wanderers

Bullets, Silver in action on Wednesday

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Silver Strikers have ended Nyasa Big Bullets’s bid for prestigious FDH Bank cup after a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory in the quarter finals at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

Goalkeeper Charles Thom saved two penalties against the Blantyre based giants to seal a date with Mighty Wanderers after a hard-fought game finished 2-2.

Bullets’ goalkeeper Ernest Kakhobwe, has been a hero in several penalty shoot-outs but he was unable to deny the Bankers in the same way he had thwarted Blue Eagles in 2016 and 2017 in presidential and FISD Cups respectively.

The game started on a high note with both teams looking hungry for goals. However, it was Bullets that showed much determination to get an early goal as three strikers namely Zicco Mkanda, Hassan Kajoke and Bright Munthali made it into the first eleven to torment Silver defenders.

With McFallen Ngwira playing in the right wing, Silver defenders led by Chisomo Mpachika were under pressure in early minutes. Just four minutes into the game, Bullets scored through Kajoke who headed home a brilliantly taken cross from Ngwira.

Despite trailing 1-0 to the visitors, Silver put up a gallant fight and dominated the proceedings but their striking force comprised of Blessings Tembo, Frank Banda and Stain Davie failed to penetrate the Bullets’ defence under the guidance of veteran Sankhani Mkandawire.

In the 35 minutes, Bullets’ defence was caught napping. The ball hit the cross bar and hit-man Davie made no mistake by hitting the back of the net through rebound as defender Mkandawire reduced himself to a spectator. Bullets 1, Silver 1, it ended in the first half.

The second half saw Bullets scoring a second goal just after four minutes again. It was a replica of the first goal as the same rare gem McFallen Ngwira threw an accurate cross which was converted into a goal by Zicco Mkanda, formerly of Mighty Wanderers.

Sensing danger, the Silver technical panel led by foreign coach Daniel Kabwe made changes. Chikondi Kamanga replaced Young Chimodzi Junior while Frank Banda was substituted for Maxwell Gasten Phodo.

Chimodzi was not himself throughout the first half and his substitution was not a surprise. The coming in of Kamanda, Phodo and Mark Fodya saw Bullets playing under pressure. Silver exchanged brilliant passes with Stain Davie disquieting Bullets defenders as Kamanga kept the engine room boiling.

Hardworking spirit by Silver yielded fruits in the 64th minute through Davie who jumped high to head home a ball from a well taken free kick by Blessings Tembo. Silver could have settled the matter in the regulation time but Tembo saw his shot saved by Rabson Chiyenda in a tete-a-tete situation.

2-2 it ended as referee Godfrey Nkhakananga blew the last whistle, and the game went straight into penalties. Chisomo Mpachika, Macheso, Levison Maganizo and Mark Fodya scored for Silver while Prince Phiri missed his spot kick.

It was a bad day for veterans of Bullets as goalkeeper Charles Thom saved spot kicks for both Sankhani Mkandawire and Henry Kabichi. Yamikani Fodya and Chimango Kaira scored to make it 4-2 in favour of the hosts.

Silver Strikers will face Mighty Wanderers in the semi finals. Wanderers booked their place after edging Salima based soldiers, Mafco FC.

In another semi final, lower league team Rumphi United will play Ekwendeni Hammers.

Blessings Tembo was declared man of the match and he went away with K50 000.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Silver  Strikers has opened a six-point gap at the top of the TNM Super league after a 2-1 victory over Chitipa United on Sunday afternoon at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

Duncan Nyoni and Patrick Macheso scored for the Bankers while Chitipa got its consolation goal through former Mighty Be Forward Wanderers’ striker Khumbo Ng’ambi.

The result has seen Silver basking at the top with 31 points followed by the defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets with 25 points. However, Bullets have a game in hand which is a clear signal of tight race.

In another game, Blue Eagles force a 1-all draw against the Salima based soldiers, Mafco FC. Mphatso Philimon and Zikani Sichinga were the scorers.

Civil Service and Mafco are on position three and four respectively while Ekwendeni Hammers finish the top five.

TNM SUPER LEAGUE LOG TABLE

Mzuni FC holds Silver to 1-1 draw

By Lusekero Mhango

Mzuni Fc head Coach Gilbart Chirwa has hailed his side’s tactical discipline and spirit shown in holding second place side Silver Strikers to a 1-1 draw in a TNM Super League match played at the Karonga Stadium on Saturday.

The struggling Mzuzu based club who were playing at the Karonga Stadium due to the closure of the Mzuzu Stadium in readiness for the 54th Independence Celebrations on sixth July, have now gone seven games without a win in the top flight league.

Despite a low turnout at the stadium the green intellectuals showed no nerves on the big stage as they battled hard to hold out comfortably against high flying bankers who were on a three game winning run.

Lameck Njalawa put the bottom side in front in the second minute to raise hopes of Mzuni ending their losing run but despite an energetic performance Silver Strikers inform striker Mphatso Philimon equalized in the second half to ensure a share of the spoils.

Speaking in a post-match interview Mzuni coach Gilbart Chirwa, expressed his delight in his side’s fighting spirit to earn a point.

“They had more of the ball and better chances but the spirit showed by my players was fantastic,” he said as his side picked up a vital point in a quest to save off relegation.

He added, the point gained against one of the title favorites has given them confidence in their remaining fixtures in the first round.

“But to see my players doing this and coping under pressure and have the humility to fight for every ball and a result against one of the best club in the country is a satisfying feeling for me as a new coach,” Chirwa explained.

Never the less the Mzuni tactician concedes they have to sharpen up their squad with new signings in the upcoming transfer window if there are to avoid relegation.

According to Silver Strikers Team Manager Francis Songo, the point gained is two points dropped in relation to the title race for them.

“We played well and we should have won the match in honesty considering the chances we had in the match but we played against a good Mzuni side and we have to take the point,” Songo said.

The point takes Silver Strikers to 20 points from 10 matches’ two points off leaders Nyasa Big Bullets who have played a game more. Meanwhile Mzuni stay in 15th place on the log table with 8 points to their name from 11 matches played so far.
