Lilongwe-based poultry company Thanzi Chicks Limited has reported a staggering loss of K450 million in just two weeks due to acts of violence and theft at its farms in Nsaru and Msundwe. The company’s Managing Director, Raj Munangi, expressed frustration over the situation and called for urgent government intervention.

Speaking to Zodiak Broadcasting Station today, Munangi described the villagers’ actions as a setback to Malawi’s economic growth. He revealed that the company had sent a detailed letter to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), outlining the extent of the damage and unusual demands made by the surrounding communities.

According to Munangi, some of the demands from the villagers include monthly allowances for every local chief and the purchase of coffins for all funerals in the area. He described these demands as “unnecessary” and counterproductive to fostering a supportive business environment.

“These kinds of demands and actions are not just hurting us as a company but are also detrimental to the economic development of the nation. We are waiting for the government to step in and resolve the matter,” Munangi said.

Village Headman Chinyama confirmed that the matter had been reported to the police. He added that several subordinates implicated in the violence and theft had already been arrested. However, he emphasized the need for a broader resolution to address the root causes of the conflict between the company and the community.

OPC spokesperson Robert Kalindiza acknowledged receiving the complaint from Thanzi Chicks Limited. “The letter has been received, and we are reviewing it. Action will be taken to address the concerns raised,” Kalindiza stated.

The losses suffered by Thanzi Chicks Limited highlight the broader challenges businesses face in Malawi, including security concerns and strained relations with local communities. With the poultry industry playing a significant role in Malawi’s economy, such disruptions can have far-reaching effects on employment, food supply, and investor confidence.

Business and community leaders have emphasized the need for dialogue to address grievances and foster mutual understanding. Stakeholders are urging the government to mediate discussions between Thanzi Chicks Limited and the affected communities to prevent further disruptions.

As the nation grapples with economic challenges, ensuring a stable environment for businesses remains critical for sustainable development.
