LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Freedom of worship and attendants rights (FOWAM) on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 expressed worrisome over President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse alliance government for failing to handle serious issues affecting Malawians including prolonged teachers strikes over unpaid Covid-19 risk allowances.
In the letter addressing Office of President, FOWAM President Prophet David Mbewe observed that it was sad to learn that alliance of nine political parties was failing to handle teachers strike.
“We have noted with great trepidation that your office seems to be in total disregard of the plight of teachers in Malawi to the extent of that teachers have to re-commence their industrial action because of your failure to address their grievances. However the failure of government to take action is affecting millions of students in public schools who are being denied their right to education.
“The recent released MSCE results is a clear manifestation of the poor state of our education system and we cannot afford to leave teachers grievances unaddressed. Its deplorable to the fact that an alliance of 9 political parties is falling to handle issues of teachers welfare,” chides Prophet Mbewe
Therefore FOWAM defenders calls upon the office of the president to immediately call for a meeting with Teachers Union of Malawi ( TUM) and all stakeholders to map the way forward.
Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has hinted that will not be intimidated with threats for its members to resume work until needs are met.
President Chakwera has not spoken on anything regarding to second wave of the teachers strike instead on Thursday, April 8, 2021 left for Mozambique for SADC meeting.
