Uganda’s prominent politician Emmanuel Kamunana gun himself down

KAMPALA-(MaraviPost)-The former Rakai District LC5 Chairperson, Emmanuel Kamunana, has died after allegedly shooting himself dead.

Confirming the tragedy, the Southern regional police spokesperson Muhammad Nsubuga, said the politician was found lying in a pool of blood and a pistol was recovered from the scene.

“The wife told the detectives that Kamunana woke up at 5am and went to the sitting room where he gunned himself down. He reportedly had a long illness which could have spiked depression and distress leading to the suicidal act,” said Nsubuga.

Kamunana was rushed to Lyantonde General Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

According to Monitor, Preliminary findings indicated that the incident happened on May 7 at his home in Nsiika Village,Buyanga Parish, Mpumudde Sub county in Lyantonde District.

The late Kamunana joined politics as a councillor for Mpumudde Sub County before Lyantonde District was carved out of Rakai District.

Between 1992 and 1994, he became the Rakai District vice chairperson under the leadership of Muwanga Kamagu and when his boss died, he took over as acting chairperson from 1994-1998 before Joseph Mulindwa Mukasa took over.

Apart from politics, Kamunana was also a prominent livestock farmer in Mpumudde County and a founding member of the Kabula Farmers’ Cooperative Society.

Suicide is a major public health concern and one of the leading causes of death among adolescents ages between 15–19 in Uganda. Reports indicate that suicide rate in the country is about 18.67% with men at a higher risk than women.
