BLANTYRE-(Maravi Post)-The University of Malawi’s Department of Economics recently hosted a symposium themed “Inclusivity and Transformation” to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the industry.

According to Happy Maliko, Chairperson of the Economics Symposium 2025, the event aimed to provide students with a platform to understand the industry and discuss economic issues that can boost the country’s economy.

Senior lecturer Dr Bertha Bangala Chikadza emphasized that the symposium was designed to marry theoretical knowledge with practical application, allowing students to interface with industry professionals and question the realities of the world they will soon enter.

“This symposium just tries to bridge what they have learnt at the university, but also linking it to what the world is offering,” Chikadza said.

The symposium featured presentations from industry experts, including the World Bank and the Reserve Bank of Malawi, providing students with both international and local perspectives on the economy.

Students showcased their problem-solving skills, discussing topics such as transforming the agriculture sector through commercialization and technology.

Guest of Honour Jacob Angel noted the importance of learning from past experiences in Malawi to overcome challenges.

“There’s a lot to learn from past experiences in Malawi on how to overcome challenges,” Angel said.

The symposium’s theme aligns with Malawi’s vision for economic transformation, as outlined in the Malawi 2063 plan.
