LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s development partner s including British government have no mandate to interfere on prosecuting agencies on corruption.
Despite aid development partners offer, they do not have power to influence Malawi’s state machinery on any criminal cases prosecuting, that is the message some civil society organisation sent on Tuesday, January 11, 2022.
Three individuals under the banner concerned Civil Society leaders asked the Attorney General, Minister of Justice, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and Homeland Security to safeguard the sovereignty of the country from foreign interference.
The three led by Nathan Chabuka of area 49 Lilongwe based organisation Tilinanu Foundation, Wilard Mhone of Centre for Mindset Change (CMC) and Melvin Nxumaye of Network for Capacity Building in Education told the news conference in the capital Lilongwe that
Chabuka observed that Malawi is facing increasing threats of interference from foreign countries namely the UK, in the way it is dealing with its affairs such as corruption fight.
He said that they want the ACB to work independently, and the other countries should respect the sovereignty of Malawi.
“We acknowledge all support Malawi receives in kind, or donations from different international communities including British government. We recognise its effort in the fight against corruption. However, it should be made clear that regardless of all the help the nation gets, Malawi is a sovereign state.
“Malawi needs to protect and defend her sovereignty and national security integrity from both internal and external threats including foreign power interference on Malawi’s national security complex matter. No country in the world would accept its security to be intruded by another state as national security are paramount,” dares Chabuka.
This comes as British National Crime Agency (NCA) just jet into Malawi last October and now to start arresting Asian businesspersons on corrupting without respecting Malawi’s sovereignty.
