Blantyre, March 25: Malawi nationals in Zimbabwe have donated relief items to those who were affected by the floods in Blantyre district which hit the in January.
Presenting the donation to the Blantyre District Council on Saturday, First Secretary in the Malawian Embassy in Zimbabwe, Arthur Ntandika said Malawians who live in Zimbabwe decided to make the donation after an announcement by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika that the nation needed help for the flood victims.
“What we are presenting here is a response to the president’s call for help for the flood victims in Malawi.
“Malawians in Zimbabwe are deeply touched by the challenges their fellow Malawians here at home are facing due to the disaster,” said Ntandika .
Receiving the donation District Monitoring and Evaluation Officer (M&EO) Henderson Kaumi hailed Malawians in Zimbabwe for taking part to assist their fellow Malawians who were affected by the disaster.
“We are grateful to the Malawi nationals in Zimbabwe for the gesture which will go a long way to address some of the challenges which the affected people are facing,” said Kaumi.
He described the donation as timely saying the council will make sure that the donation reaches the beneficiaries wherever they are.
The donation which includes maize flour, cooking oil, sugar, salt, clothes, shoes, plastic sheets and hampers with assorted kitchen utensils and some groceries is worth about K2 million.
According to Malawi Embassy in Zimbabwe the relief items came from Malawians and different religious groups in Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile Blantyre has 30,000 people affected by the floods some of whom are still in 14 camps while others are being kept by their relatives while a few went back home after constructing temporary shelters using plastic sheets from well wishers.
