LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As one way of changing farmers’ mindset on climate change,23 countries from West, South, and Eastern Africa are being equipped on how best to disseminate climate change information about Agriculture.
Malawi’s Department of Meteorological Service Director, Dr. Lucy Mtila Mtila said this on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the end of the workshop dubbed Climate Services for Building Climate Resilience of the Agriculture Sector in Africa using CLIMTAG.
Mtila Mtila said the meeting aims at customizing agro-climatic information at high resolution.
She said the climate calendar should be set in line with the Agriculture calendar for better preparedness of farmers and all stakeholders involved.
In his remarks, the African Union, Director of Meteorological Services, Jolly Wansambo said they are implementing a climate services resolution project and the training will help them to reach out to many African countries with better information on climate services.
Mwansambo said the information which they going to convey to the continent will be based on every mindset of those that are involved.
Concurring with AU, Vito R and D Climate impacts in Agriculture, Francisco Pereira said they have developed a tool that farmers will use in detecting meteorological services.
The training workshop brought together agriculture experts and meteorologists with the aim of laying a road map for the implementation of meteorological services in their respective African countries.
Recently Meteorological Services predicted that from January to March 2024, Malawians should anticipate normal to below-normal total rainfall amounts over most areas with the possibility of above-normal rainfall in January.
