SRFA General Secretary Geroge Mpagaja said the payment was made possible following the team’s impressive payment of affiliation fees.
“We have managed to make the payments because most of the teams have been faithful in paying their affiliation fees this season. Seventeen out of 21 teams have paid 75 percent of their affiliation fees,” Mpagaja said.
Mpagaja hoped that the move would help the association to forge a good working relationship with the referees to ensure the development of football in the region.
Southern Referees Committee Chairman Alfred Chasowa confirmed receipt of the payment but he said the league still owed referees money.
“They have indeed paid the money but the information we gave them was wrong. We indicated K1.6 million but there is a balance of K242,000 that they need to clear the debts. We have already told them about the shortfall,” Chasowa said.
He assured the league that clearing of outstanding dues would help them to concentrate on officiating.
“We will continue officiating the games because we are here to help develop football,” he said.
The referees boycotted the games for two weeks this season to enforce the body pay but they resolved the issue to continue officiating the games.
The league was suspended for over a month two seasons ago after the referee staged a strike.
