Carlsberg Cup last year finalists, Zomba United out of the race

1 Min Read

Zomba United failed to replicate last year’s fairytale run in the K30 million Carlsberg Cup after being knocked by Ndirande Icons 3-1 on post-match penalties in the second round of the regional phase.

Zomba United produced a sensational performance last year by reaching the final only to Bullets 2-0.

They have missed to reach the national draw after a one-all tie in regulation time and Icons won the shutout to qualify for the national draw.

They cruised to the second round after beating Zomba Research 2-1 while Ndirande Icons, who have proved to be a sensational team of the competition, booted out Prison United on penalty shoot-outs.

Ndirande Icons will represent the South in the national draw alongside Max Bullets who beat Green Hawks 5-0 and Changalume Barracks who beat Nyasa United 2-0.

Silver Reserve Youth became the first team in the Central Region side to qualify for the National draw after beating Kasungu Police 2-0.

The other two places for the Central Region will be decided today as Civo Reserves face Master Security while Support Battalion take on Black Eagles.

In the North, former Super League side Karonga United needed post match penalties to book a place in the National phase with a 4-3 win over Rumphi Medicals.

They are joined by OPC FC who had a walkover after Chalaghala forfeited points after reporting late for the match.

Chirumba Barracks were the first team to qualify for the national phase from the Northern Region after beating after beating Kaporo Stars 1-0.
