Malawi U-21 Netballers edge Zambia in opening test match

1 Min Read

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Under-21 National Netball Team has started their three match International Series in style, defeating hosts Zambia by 12 baskets in Lusaka on Friday evening.

The Junior Queens registered a 52-40 victory, a result that keeps them unbeaten against the Zambians in recent years.

However, this winning margin was slightly less dominant compared to their last encounter during the World Youth Cup Qualifiers in Pretoria last year, when Malawi triumphed 54-35, a 19-basket difference.

Head coach Noel Mussa praised his young squad for their spirited performance, noting that Zambia pushed them harder this time around.

“My girls played well today even though Zambia also showed great improvement. I had advised my players to minimize unnecessary turnovers and avoid careless mistakes with the ball. Overall, I am happy with the discipline and energy they showed on court,” said Mussa after the match.

Looking ahead, the coach warned that Saturday’s second test could be even tougher, pointing out that Zambia would be more determined after suffering back to back defeats to Malawi in recent encounters.

The International Series is part of Malawi’s preparations for upcoming continental tournaments and also offers a chance to assess new talent in the junior ranks.

Several debutants featured in the first match and impressed with their composure despite playing away from home.

The second match is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, before the series concludes on Sunday.
