BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President of the People’s Party (PP )Joyce Banda,says if she is elected into government in the upcoming September 16 elections, she will prioritize fixing the country’s economy to ensure that Malawians are lifted out of the hardships they are currently facing.
Speaking in Mangochi on Friday, where she was outlining her plans should she win the presidency, Banda who is also the former president of this country,said she intends to revamp the mining sector as part of her efforts to improve the economy and the livelihoods of Malawians.
She emphasized that illegal mining activities, such as those happening in Mangochi and Machinga where foreigners are buying and smuggling gold, must come to an end and instead,the government should take control of such operations to ensure that Malawians benefit.
Banda added that she has already developed plans to empower women and the youth.
She said for example, she plans to introduce loan programs for women and provide motorbikes to young people for use in commercial transport (kabaza) so that they can earn a living.
The former president also stated that she has secured partnerships with international companies that are ready to set up operations in the country to manufacture the motorbikes locally that will be distributed to the youth and sold at affordable prices to create employment and reduce idleness among the youth.
Banda ruled Malawi from April 7,2012 to May 31,2014.
She took office as president following the sudden death of president Bingu wa Mutharika.
