LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) has petitioned Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to recount voters in four districts amid allegations of data manipulation.

Addressing the news conference on Saturday, September 20, 2025 UDF leader Atupele Muluzi disclosed that affected districts including Blantyre, Mangochi, Machinga and Zomba.

“I am as disturbed like anyone that our vote as Malawians is in jeopardy. We have found so many irregularities in many tally Centres in Blantyre, Mangochi, Machinga and Zomba.

“Such irregularities are the differences on the candidates’ votes and those who actually voted. Such things demotivate people”, he said.

“We have written MEC and have provided evidence. want signed copies for the above districts, recount the votes and says they have provided all evidence required,” says Muluzi.

He also added that the party lawyers are ready to take up the matters to court, should there be need to do so.

The UDF leader therefore lauded MEC for being professional in handling the electoral process.

Muluzi says the powers in any elected person comes from the people, “An election needs to be won not because of money or tricks, but through honesty”.

The law allows MEC to announce Presidential votes within eight days after polls.
