Walter Nyamilandu Manda has stepped into a high-stakes national role after being appointed to lead a fresh parliamentary inquiry into one of Malawi’s deadliest recent tragedies the Chikangawa plane crash that claimed the life of former Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others.

Nyamilandu will chair a newly established ad hoc committee tasked with re-examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash of June 10, 2024.

The move signals renewed determination by Parliament to uncover the truth and provide answers to a nation still in mourning.

He will be deputized by James Mpunga, MP for Zomba City South, who has been elected vice chairperson.

The two lawmakers are expected to steer a comprehensive and transparent investigation aimed at addressing lingering questions about the incident.

The formation of the committee was announced in Parliament by Speaker Sameer Suleiman following internal elections held earlier in the day.

The Chikangawa crash sent shockwaves across the country, not only due to the loss of Chilima, but also because of unresolved concerns that have persisted in its aftermath.

With the new committee now in place, Parliament faces mounting public pressure to deliver clarity, ensure accountability, and restore confidence in the handling of the tragedy.
