WASHINGTON-(MaraviPost)-In USA, a gunman who opened fire near the White House while Donald Trump was inside has been named as 21-year-old Nasire Best.
The White House was placed into lockdown on Saturday evening after reports of between 15 and 30 gunshots near the presidential complex at around 6pm local time.
Secret Service agents and snipers were seen surrounding the area as chaos unfolded outside the building.
Sources told CBS News the suspect approached agents and opened fire before officers returned shots.
Best later died in hospital. One other person, believed to be a bystander, was injured during the exchange.
According to a source familiar with the investigation, Best had previously been arrested by the US Secret Service in July 2025 after allegedly trying to gain entry to the White House.
He was reportedly sent to a psychiatric ward afterwards for mental health treatment.
Journalists at the scene said they were rushed into the White House briefing room as the lockdown began.
The security alert was lifted around 7pm local time.
Authorities have not confirmed a motive, the type of weapon used, or whether the injured bystander was struck by gunfire from Best or Secret Service agents.
Donald Trump has taken to Truth Social to share his thanks to the Secret Service and law enforcement for their “swift and professional action” during the incident.
