LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Former Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu has requested to be the first person interviewed by an ad-hoc parliamentary committee investigating the plane crash that killed Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others.
The request places Kunkuyu at the center of renewed public and political scrutiny surrounding the June 2024 disaster.
The military aircraft crashed on June 10, 2024, while carrying Chilima and other passengers to the funeral of prominent lawyer Ralph Kasambara.
The accident cut short the life of Malawi’s vice president and triggered national mourning, as well as questions about the circumstances of the flight.
Kunkuyu said he wanted to clarify allegations linked to remarks he allegedly made about the aircraft’s black box.
His statement suggests an effort to address speculation that has circulated since the crash regarding the recovery and handling of flight data.
Kunkuyu said appearing before the committee at the outset was important because his testimony could help conclude certain aspects of the investigation.
He framed the early appearance as a way to resolve uncertainty quickly and prevent prolonged public debate over disputed claims.
The former minister also noted that this was standard practice in aviation-related inquiries.
His reference to international norms appears aimed at lending procedural legitimacy to his request and to the committee’s work.
