New Year eve’s 16 road accidents claim 11 lives -Malawi Police

1 Min Read

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Police Services said the country recorded eleven deaths out of sixteen accidents occurred on New Year eve and January 1, 2019.

The development mean that the accidents have increased by 75 per cent from last year’s figures.

Police spokesperson James Kadadzera said most of the accidents were as a result of reckless driving and over speeding.

“We recorded 186 cases of over-speeding and 18 cases of driving under alcohol,” he said.

He said same time last year, the police recorded one death and four accidents.

Social commentator Emily MKamanga attributed the rise in the deaths and accidents due to bad roads and corruption.

“There are a lot of potholes on our roads. Drivers also easily corrupt traffic police when they have unroadworthy vehicles or they do not have valid driving licences,” she said.

The police say they will work hard to ensure that the accidents rate go down in 2019.
