KARONGA (MaraviPost iReport): A few weeks after the High court in Mzuzu ordered the Malawi Police Services as well as the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in the country to arrest and prosecute lesbian, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) found committing the offence, the Traditional leaders in Chitipa and Karonga have joined hands in restricting the existence of the practice in their areas arguing that it is against their culture.

Paramount Chief Kyungu who is the Senior Chief in Karonga and Chitipa said this during the Chief’s session which was held in Karonga district the north of Malawi on Tuesday.

According to Kyungu, the community should not allow some international organizations to spoil their culture and beliefs because of monetary support they give to the country.

‘I am asking you my followers not to allow gays or lesbians in our districts because it is against our norms and culture so the international organizations should not force us to adopt their beliefs as well as their cultural traditions, if they want let them do that in their countries not here,” said Kyungu.

“Do you think we would have been here today if our parents were doing this? So staring from today I don’t want to see these activities happening in my areas,” he added.

In his remarks Senior Chief Wasambo concurred with Kyungu saying “these practices are also against God’s words so as God fearing nation we need to respect it.”

Wasambo also urged Malawians as a whole not to bow down to the donor’s demand as well as listening to some Non Governmental Organizations who are supporting the issue claiming that they are after the donor’s money.

Religious Readers and some politicians have openly criticized international donors for pressurizing the country to legalize LGBTL while asking the president Peter Munthalika not to bow down to the act.

Meanwhile no one has come on open or arrested on the issue of LGBTI in the two districts.
