KAMPALA-(MaraviPost)-Uganda’s upcoming elections on January 15, 2026, are shaping up to be a historic showdown between incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, 81, and his rival, 43-year-old musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine.
Museveni has been in power since 1986, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, with a firm grip on Ugandan politics.
In contrast, Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, is a relatively new face in politics, having transitioned from music to politics and becoming a prominent opposition leader.
Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) party has gained significant traction, particularly among Uganda’s youth, who make up over 80% of the population.
A key difference between the two candidates is their approach to governance.
Museveni’s campaign focuses on stability and continuity, highlighting his experience and achievements in maintaining peace and security in Uganda.
On the other hand, Wine’s campaign emphasizes change, promising to end authoritarian rule, address corruption, and create economic opportunities for Uganda’s youth.
The two candidates also differ in their backgrounds. Museveni is a veteran politician and former guerrilla commander, while Wine is a musician and activist who has faced repeated arrests and threats from the government.
The election is expected to be contentious, with concerns about intimidation, vote rigging, and the independence of the Electoral Commission.
Other candidates in the running include:
- Mugisha Muntu (Alliance for National Transformation)
- Munyagwa Mubarak Sserunga (Common Man’s Party)
- Elton Joseph Mabirizi (Conservative Party)
- Robert Kasibante (National Peasants Party)
- Frank Bulira Kabinga (Revolutionary Peoples Party)
- Nathan James Nandala Mafabi (Forum for Democratic Change)
