BRASILIA-(MaraviPost)-Carlos Alberto Decotelli, Brazil’s education minister has resigned just five days after his appointment amid accusations that he lied over his academic record.

Decotelli’s spokesperson Paulo Roberto confirmed the report on Wednesday, July1, 2020.

Reports by Daily Sabah indicated that Decotelli had claimed in his CV that he held a Master’s degree from Brazil’s Getulio Vargas Foundation, a doctorate from Argentina’s University of Rosario and a post-doctorate from Germany’s Wuppertal University.

However, days after his appointment a series of controversies arose which forced people to scrutinize his academic records which led to the revelations that Decotelli had not obtained a doctorate degree and had never defended his thesis at Rosario University as disclosed by rector of the university.

In response to the claims, Wuppertal University also dismissed the claims saying Decotelli had not obtained any academic titles there.

Decotelli was the first black person to be appointed to the government of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.

He was also the third education minister in 18 months following resignation of his predecessor Abraham Weintraub, who resigned in mid-June after becoming embroiled in a series of controversies, including making racist anti-Chinese comments on Twitter.
