YAOUNDE-(MaraviPost)-Cameroon President Paul Biya has approved performance bonuses for players of the national football team following their qualification to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Indomitable Lions secured their place in the last eight after a hard-fought victory over South Africa, a result that boosted national pride and renewed optimism among football supporters.
Following the achievement, authorities announced that each player is set to receive a substantial financial reward in recognition of their efforts and commitment at the continental tournament.
The bonus package amounts to approximately 18.18 million CFA francs per player, which is equivalent to about €27,000. The amount is understood to include both qualification and match victory bonuses.
While some reports claimed that President Biya personally awarded €30,000 to each player, these figures have not been officially confirmed by government or football federation sources.
Officials have, however, emphasized that the Cameroonian state traditionally rewards the national team for reaching key stages of major tournaments, in line with established government policy.
The Ministry of Sports and Physical Education has played a central role in coordinating the bonuses, working in collaboration with football authorities to ensure players are compensated for their performances.
The financial incentive is seen as a morale booster as Cameroon prepares for the quarterfinal clash with hopes of progressing further in the competition.
Cameroon, a five time AFCON champion, is aiming to add another title to its rich football history and the government’s gesture is viewed as a sign of confidence in the squad.
