BLANTRYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has congratulated Malawi National Team, the Flames, for whipping Ethiopia 2- 1 through penalties.
“I am elated to have been part of the ecstatic crowd that witnessed the Flames’ 2-1 victory over Ethiopia in the first qualifier for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Well done Flames. We are off to a good start. Let’s keep the fire burning!” said Chakwera soon after the match.
Malawi has won it’s opening match in the 2023 Africa Cup of the Nation’s qualifer against Ethiopia at Bingu National Stadium.
It was an exciting game to watch which was patronized by the country’s President, Vice President Dr Saulosi Chilima and other officials together with thousands of soccer loving Malawians.
Gabadhino Mhango scored both two goals at 9 minutes and 43 minutes of the first half making the Flames lead by 2 goals to nill at the end of the first half.
Ethiopia came hard in the second half and managed to score through Abubaker Nasir Ahmed but the Flames maintained defence to end the game 2-1 in their favor.
Suprising, both teams scored through penalties.
Flames will face Guinea in their next match in their Group D campaign.
At 36 minutes in the second half, renowned commentator Charles Nyirenda was overheard on Zodiak Broadcasting Station weighing in on what sums up the lacklustre performance that characterized the Flames play in their first 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifier.
Everyone could agree, Ethiopia was a better side but as they stole the show with good play, the Flames did the scoring.
Eventually, the Flames with the help of good omen from President Chakwera edged Ethiopia with two first half penalty-kick goals from Frank Gabadinho Mhango.
Despite the poor performance, the Flames is three points richer and on to their second match against Guinea next week.
