Inspector General of Police, Merlylin Yolamu, has announced a significant drop in crime rates since she assumed office.

Speaking in Blantyre during the Public Affairs Committee’s all-inclusive stakeholders’ conference, Yolamu attributed the decline to effective policing strategies and community engagement.

While Yolamu didn’t provide specific figures on the extent of the drop, she emphasized her administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order.

“We have seen a significant drop in crime rates, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure our communities are safe,” she said.

However, Yolamu acknowledged that some police officers engage in malpractice, compromising the integrity of the force.

“Once caught, these officers will face disciplinary action,” she warned, underscoring the importance of accountability within the police service.

Yolamu urged Malawians to be law-abiding citizens and live in harmony with one another.

“We all have a role to play in maintaining peace and stability in our communities,” she emphasized.

In a separate but related issue, Yolamu expressed concern over the rising number of road accidents, attributing them largely to overspeeding.

“We are seeing an increase in road accidents due to reckless driving,” she said, appealing to motorists to abide by road rules and speed limits.

Yolamu’s call to action emphasizes the need for collective responsibility in promoting road safety. “Let’s work together to reduce road accidents and make our roads safer for everyone,” she urged.

The IG’s remarks highlight the police force’s commitment to improving safety and security in Malawi.

As the country moves forward, it remains to be seen how these initiatives will impact crime rates and road safety in the long term.
