Malawi Law and Order – Dedza couple and accomplices arrested for stealing newly-born baby

DEDZA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in the central district of Dedza, arrested a couple; Gladson Jacob Banda and Saukira Saidi for allegedly stealing a child.

The police also arrested Emily Samalani, mother to Saukira Saidi, and Evidence Jacob, sister to Gladson Jacob, for allegedly aiding the couple to steal the baby.

According to Dedza police station spokesperson Edward Kabango, it was established that on April 3, this year, Saukira went to Dauya village, where she introduced herself as Eunice Msukwa from Karonga, who runs an orphanage in Blantyre.

The suspect told the Village Head that she had authority from the police to adopt a pregnant teenager in the village and wanted to take her to Blantyre.

However, the said pregnant girl delivered a baby at Dedza Hospital before she could make it to Blantyre, and Saukira later fled with the baby after leaving the new mother around the Boma.

Kabango added that police investigations revealed that Saukira took the baby to her home village, Santhe in Kasungu.

“Investigations further revealed that the couple has been married for 7 years, but they do not have any child between them although each has two children from previous relations.

“They will appear in court soon to answer a case of child abduction that is contrary to Section 78 (1) of the Child Protection Act,” Kabango said.
