Indonesia’s flash floods claim 16 lives with 23 others still missing

JAKARTA-(MaraviPost)-At least 16 people have been confirmed dead in South Island Sulawesi province and 23 missing following flash floods that hit Indonesia.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Raditya Jati confirmed the tragedy.

Report by ABC News indicated that the flood began on Monday evening and was triggered by heavy rains that caused three rivers to overflow causing hundreds of homes, government offices and public facilities submerged in up to five metres of mud.

According to Jati, on Wednesday the mud covered the main road into North Luwu district blocking access to affected areas affecting more than 4,000 residents of six subdistricts in North Luwu adding to the country’s burden that has been severely hit by the novel coronavirus.

Commenting on the matter, North Luwu mitigation and rescue agency head Muslim Muchsin said reports from local resident indicates that several people are still missing.

He has however disclosed that the department in working to clean out the debris that inundated the road so they can open the access to the site to bring logistics.
