President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has arrived at Auction Holdings Limited’s floors, where he will officially open the 2024/2025 tobacco market season in Kanengo, Lilongwe.

The president’s arrival marks the formal commencement of Malawi’s tobacco trading season, a vital economic event for the country.

The tobacco market season has commenced, with farmers selling their leaf at $3.20 per kilogram.

This starting price has sparked cautious optimism among farmers, many of whom rely on tobacco sales as their primary source of income.

According to Tobacco Commission spokesperson Telephorous Chigwenembe, the price is promising and encouraging for farmers.

Chigwenembe emphasized that this year’s pricing structure gives hope to growers who have invested heavily in their fields, despite challenges such as rising input costs and unpredictable weather patterns.

The launch of the tobacco season is not only an economic milestone but also a significant political event, often attended by top government officials and stakeholders in the agriculture sector.

Upon his arrival, President Chakwera was welcomed by several officials, reflecting the importance the administration places on the tobacco industry.

Among those who received the president were Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet Madame Colleen Zamba, Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale, and Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara.

Other government officials and industry players also graced the occasion, underscoring a shared commitment to ensuring the success of the season.

Tobacco remains one of Malawi’s primary foreign exchange earners, despite calls for diversification due to global anti-smoking campaigns and declining demand in traditional markets.

Nevertheless, it continues to employ thousands of Malawians and supports entire communities, especially in rural areas.

President Chakwera’s presence at the launch signifies government backing for the industry, even as the country navigates the delicate balance between sustaining tobacco farming and embracing agricultural diversification.

The official opening ceremony is expected to include a speech by the president, highlighting government strategies to boost agricultural productivity, ensure fair prices, and empower smallholder farmers.

In previous seasons, farmers have raised concerns over exploitative pricing, late payments, and intermediary manipulation in the supply chain.

This year, expectations are high that regulatory bodies and buyers will conduct business transparently and justly.

Stakeholders, including farmer associations, are hopeful that this season will set a positive precedent in both pricing and logistics.

As the trading season unfolds, attention will turn to how prices evolve, how volumes flow into the auction floors, and whether farmers will receive timely and fair compensation for their produce.

With a favorable opening price and visible government involvement, the 2024/2025 tobacco season begins with optimism, determination, and a renewed focus on agricultural transformation.

For now, all eyes remain on Kanengo as the heartbeat of Malawi’s tobacco trade pulses once again.
