BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a significant step towards promoting peaceful coexistence ahead of the September 16 General Election, Centre for Social Concern (CfSC) has brought together political party representatives, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and other key stakeholders in Mangochi to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) pledging to foster peace and unity in the district.

During the signing ceremony, CfSC Deputy Director Father Matthews Banseh emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity, stating that politics should not undermine the prevailing harmony in the district.

“The forthcoming elections should be an opportunity to strengthen social cohesion,” he said. “Let us come together and refuse to be misled by politicians who promote violence.

Any political leader or party that does so should not be followed or voted for, because war does not build a community.”

Representatives from various political parties, including Deen Iman from the Malawi Congress Party and Salire M’dala from the Democratic Progressive Party, reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace throughout the campaign period.

They agreed that it is possible to conduct peaceful and orderly elections in the district, and their presence at the ceremony demonstrated their dedication to this cause.

Mangochi District Commissioner Davie Chigwenembe praised CfSC for facilitating the MoU, saying it will help promote peaceful coexistence in the district.

The signing ceremony was preceded by a solidarity walk from Soko Bus Stage to Mangochi Municipal Council Hall, where the ceremony was held, showcasing the leaders’ commitment to peace.

This initiative is part of CfSC’s broader efforts to promote peace and tolerance in Malawi, particularly during election periods.

In January 2025, CfSC launched the Mangochi Peace Games, a pioneering initiative aimed at promoting peace and co-existence among community members ahead of the general elections.

The program brings together young people from different political affiliations, ethnic backgrounds, and religious beliefs to participate in various sports and activities, fostering a culture of peace, tolerance, and understanding.

The MoU signing ceremony in Mangochi serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of peace and unity in the lead-up to the elections.

By working together, leaders can ensure that the electoral process is peaceful, orderly, and conducive to the well-being of all citizens.
