LILONGWE (MaraviPost)-Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Malawi Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa has condemned President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse government for hiking public university fees.
Moving the motion on Thursday, July 27, 2023, Nankhumwa told the August House that government should review the matter with urgency.
Nankhumwa, therefore, promised to come back to the house with another motion for the members to debate on the issue arguing that “It’s critical”.
Echoing the same, Member of Parliament (MP) for Mzimba North, Yeremiya Chihana gave Chakwera Tonse government two weeks ultimatum to work on the public fees.
Chihana said children are already struggling with the current fees as some are withdrawing from colleges.

Concurring with Chihana, Machinga East MP, Ester Jolobala said the fee hike has come at a time Malawians are going through social-economic ills.
Jolobala said the government needs to lower the fees for the betterment of every Malawian.
“Parents are coming from Cyclone Freddy background and they are already struggling fees hike is not ideal for the poor Malawians,” said Jolobala.
In his response, Leader of the House, Chimwendo Banda said the fee increment was done after consultation with the treasury.
Meanwhile, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resource (LUANAR) students are expected to be paying MK600,000 fees from MK350,000 per year.
