Malawi Court Fines Man K30 000 for Illegally selling liquor sachets

Lilongwe, March 19: A man who was arrested recently in Mwanza, for illegally selling liquor sachets has been fined K30 000 or in default serve an 8-month-jail sentence with hard labour.

The Mwanza Magistrates Court on Tuesday found Donnex Tebulo guilty for possessing liquor sachets, which were banned by Malawi Government in February.

 

Speaking to Malawi News Agncy (Mana) Mwanza police spokesperson Victor Chirwa said the convict was arrested on March 14 at Chifunga roadblock where he was allegedly found selling liquor sachets.

Tebulo was detained at Mwanza police station and on March 17, 2015 appeared before the Mwanza Magistrates Court and was fined K30, 000 or in default be sent behind bars for 8 months.

On 16th February Government of Malawi through cabinet directive banned the selling of liquor sachets which various stakeholders have complained as being abused by children as the sachets are deemed very easy to access.
