KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has appealed to residents in Karonga to engage certified electrical installers to ensure safety of their properties and lives.

MERA made the appeal on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 in the District following an interface meeting with electrical installers and property owners where it was disclosed that the district has only five licenced electrical installers.

Speaking in an interview MERA’s Senior Licencing Officer Tufwane Mwagomba, said Karonga was a fast growing district where a lot of activities were taking place which require electricity thus appealed to the public to use certified electrical installers to ensure value for money and safety of property and lives.

He said use of good quality installation material is vital in ensuring safety of the electricity installation and reduces accident like fires.

“Looking at the developmental activities that are taking place in the district it means a majority of these installations are being done by unlicensed installers which is posing a huge risk to the properties and lives as the installers may not be meeting the standards of the installation in accordance with the requirements of an installation hence some installations are prone to fires and malfunctions,” he said.

Mwagomba therefore appealed to the electrical installers to come forward and register thereby ensuring that Karonga starts to benefit from having a number of licenced installers thus improving service delivery to consumers.

However Brave Billy Sambo one of the electrical installers who is also the Director of Karonga Technical College bemoaned the long process and time taken for one to be issued with a licence hence called upon MERA to establish district offices to fast-track the process.

“While we hail MERA for engaging us electrical installers our appeal to them is to come with other guidelines and incentives which will make more installers go and register for their licence therefore increasing the number of licenced electrical installers in the district,” he articulated.
