LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-A civil society group under the banner Malawi First has issued a 14-day ultimatum to all sitting ministers and aspiring Members of Parliament to declare their assets, while also calling on the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to suspend its engagement with a technology provider for the 2025 elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe on Thursday, May 8, Malawi First leader Bon Kalindo stressed the need for transparency and accountability in public office, under the theme: “A Call for Transparency and Accountability in Malawi’s Leadership.”

Kalindo raised concerns over the electronic voting system’s credibility, citing reported failures during Mozambique’s recent elections.

He warned that Malawi could face similar challenges if MEC proceeds with the company without proper scrutiny.

“MEC must remember that these are not their elections, but Malawians’. They must be managed with transparency and accountability,” Kalindo stated.

He emphasized that public officer regardless of their position, tribe, religion, or political affiliation must adhere to the law by publicly declaring their assets.

He added that this is not only a legal obligation but a moral responsibility to Malawians.

“Be informed: MEC exists to safeguard Malawians’ right to vote. Any threats to that right will not be tolerated,” Kalindo warned.

Kalindo therefore said failure to adhere to the demands will lead to nationwide mobilization and further action by concerned citizens.
