Malawi Govt to rehabilitate M1 Road

The Malawi  Government, with support from the European Investment Bank (EIB) will start rehabilitation of M1 Road from Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe to Chiweta in Karonga, soon.

 

Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango announced this in Karonga during supervision of construction of Karonga- Songwe Border road, on Saturday.

 

Mhango said EIB has approved 120 million Euros (over MK105 billion) of which 40 million Euros (about K35 billion) will be in form of a grant.

 

He said 80 million Euros (about K70 billion) will be a loan pending approval of parliament.

 

“We want to rehabilitate the M1 road from Kamuzu International Airport up to Mzimba turn-off and from Kacheche to Chiweta.

 

“These are the sections we have seen that they are really bad. Tenders will be advertised soon for contractors to bid for this project,” said Mhango.

 

Mhango said government is working tirelessly in transforming the country and that those with eyes are able to see.

 

“This is the only government that is doing seventeen major road construction projects at once.

 

He said the Karonga- Songwe Border Road, which is in final touches, is the sixth road government has constructed within four years.
