LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-A Nigerian businessman identified as Collins Iheanacho Bernard, 45, has been arrested by police at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe for illegal foreign currency activities.
KIA Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Inspector Sapulain Chitonde Lee, told us in an interview that on March 25, 2026, at approximately 13:35 hours, detectives conducting routine searches in the Forward Lounge intercepted Benard.
Chitonde Lee explained that, although Benard initially denied carrying any foreign currency when asked to declare his funds, a thorough physical search uncovered $2,800 hidden in his old passport and pockets.
“Bernard failed to provide supporting documentation, claiming the money was given to him by a friend without formal paperwork.
He was subsequently arrested, and the foreign currency was confiscated,” he said.
Chitonde Lee urged all passengers to comply with exit formalities to avoid similar arrests.
Bernard, who hails from Amanator Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Ebonyi, Lagos, will face charges for possessing foreign currency without permits and attempting to externalize currency, in violation of the Exchange Control Act.
